Metaverse-Driven Autonomous Transportation and Emerging Technologies: Unlocking the Potential for Smart Cities of the Future

SCOPE:

Rapid developments in key technologies like Internet-of-Things (IoT), Augmented and Virtual reality (AR/VR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have changed the perception of urban users in smart cities. Thus, smart city transportation has also accelerated owing to these technological disruptions, which has led to the design of efficient and sustainable transportation systems. Embedded with smart sensors, Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) communicate over resilient wireless links for infotainment, road conditions, energy stations, and vehicle platooning. However, to fully realize the potential of autonomous transportation in smart cities, shortly, it is expected that Metaverse will play a prominent role. Metaverse provides a collective virtual shared space that connects physical and digital worlds and presents new opportunities for immersive and personalized transportation experiences. Metaverse-driven transport combines AR and VR into transportation experiences to make road conditions and maps more immersive, and thus can address the challenges of traditional transport systems, such as traffic congestion, limited access, and lack of user-centered services.

This special issue explores the potential of metaverse-driven autonomous transportation and emerging technologies in smart cities. We invite submissions that address the following topics:

  • Requirements and challenges for smart and autonomous transformation in smart cities, including the role of emerging technologies such as AI, IoT, and AR/VR.
  • Opportunities and challenges of metaverse-driven transportation in urban environments, including use cases such as ride-sharing, public transportation, and last-mile delivery.
  • Innovative solutions for integrating metaverse-driven transportation and emerging technologies into smart cities, including interoperability, security, and privacy challenges.
  • Case studies and real-world deployments of metaverse-driven transportation and emerging technologies in smart cities, including analysis of user acceptance and impact on urban mobility.

Given the significant impact of these technologies on the future of autonomous transportation, a special issue on this topic would be of great value to the journal's readers. The special issue would provide a platform for researchers, engineers, and experts in the field to share their latest findings, ideas, and innovations related to metaverse-driven autonomous vehicles and emerging technologies.
