Abstract

Receiver-side optical filtering trades useful-signal attenuation against noise suppression in free-space optical communication. We analyse a 40 Gbps, 1.54 km OptiSystem link at 1552.52 nm using six filter responses. A normalized variance metric combines received power and signal-to-noise ratio. IIR, Gaussian and Bessel responses increase Q from 6.94 to 8.81–8.94 and signal-to-noise ratio from 16.83 to 18.90–19.03 dB. Under a fixed-gain signal-power interpretation, the inferred effective variance decreases by 45.81–46.50%; the individual background-noise contribution is not identified. Error rates near 10⁻¹⁹ are analyzer estimates. We clarify the fixed-loss channel assumption, derive a filter-benefit condition, and discuss hardware, adaptive selection, and potential transport and maritime applications. Outdoor validation and recovery of the original filter settings remain necessary.
